TUNING: Kevin’s 2013 Nismo 370Z

Filed under: 370z,Featured Cars and Projects,Maintenance,Performance
by Alvin G @ 5:10 pm on December 27, 2021

Kevin M visited Z Car Garage for Stillen intakes, test pipes and dyno tuning on his 2013 Nismo 370Z.

He found this V1 Nismo Z34 in September 2020 at a Nissan dealership that was not yet advertised. Being a rare Magma Red model he jumped on it quickly.

A common issue on the 370Z is the internal slave failing due to heat. Thankfully Z Speed Performance makes a kit to convert the internal slave to external (CMAK Upgrade). In January 2021 on his first to ZCG we performed the CMAK upgrade. Since the transmission was removed Kevin opted for a Z Speed Stage 1 Quiet clutch with steel flywheel:

“When I first got the Nismo I was worried about the infamous csc going out. So I looked up for any shops that dealt strictly with Nissan and I was lucky enough to come across Z Car Garage. Transmission work included the Zspeed Performance Stage one quiet clutch kit with C MAK. My Nismo felt almost brand new compared to when I drove it off the dealership.”

We also installed Whiteline diff bushings on that first visit and discussed doing a tune and some hot rod stuff in the future.

In October 2021 Kevin returned to ZCG. We installed CWorks Test Pipes and Stillen GEN 3 intakes:

Dyno Tuning

We specialize in UPREV and EcuTek Tuning to maximize power gains from individual modifications like intake and exhaust upgrades. Rob UPREV flashed Kevin’s Z with the additional ARC license. Baseline power was 296hp/256tq and after tuning it made 338hp/275tq at the wheels, gains of 42hp/19tq. Kevin was happy with the power improvements.

Enjoy this video with dyno runs and exhaust system sounds!

Thanks for your support Kevin, Long Live The Z!

Z Car Garage offers the ARC (Advanced Racing Controls) license. This add-on service to the existing UPREV Flash allows you to have adjustable launch control, burnout mode, and flat-foot shifting. This is for cars with manual transmission, VDC/cruise control. Call Rob for more details and to schedule your Z/G tuning appointment.

Efrain’s Q60S

At Z Car Garage we have been maintaining and modifying late model Nissan/Infiniti sports cars since 2004. From Z cars (Z32, 350z, 370z) and R35 GT-Rs to G35, G37, Q50/Q60 cars we look forward to working on your vehicle. Efrain S visited us from Sacramento with his 2019 Infiniti Q60S Silver Sport for basic performance upgrades from AMS Performance including their AMS Heat Exchanger and AMS Air intakes and a Z1 Motorsports Blow-off Valve kit:

Dyno Tuning

Straight from the factory, the VR30DDTT is an impressive motor. The Hi-Output version is rated at 400 hp and 350 ft-lbs tq, underrated as we have seen with dyno testing. With a few bolt-ons and tuning, even more power can be unlocked from the VR30. Rob dyno tuned the Q using EcuTek. Baseline power was 333hp/314tq at the wheels. With the AMS parts and tuning final numbers were 412hp/452tq, gains of +79hp/138tq:

The VR30-series responds so well to bolt-ons and gets us excited. It’s almost like Nissan has comeback full-circle as the VR reminds us of modifying Z32TT’s in the 90’s:  big gains with just few upgrades. The Q-series cars are really well-suited to the upgrades too with a very comfortable ride and massive hp/tq when you want it.

Here is the Q on the dyno:

Efrain was very pleased with the power gains:

“Honestly man my experience with Rob from start to finish was amazing. I could tell he loves his job, loves what he does and energy was on 100%, 7 days a week. Once I got the results back from the tune I was blown away I thought I was maybe going to see about 400 horsepower to the wheels at the most and he got it over to 412 with 450 torque, I couldn’t believe it. My bolt-ons are flawless, could not be anymore happy with the work from you guys and the whole experience I love the car thank you guys.”

Enjoy The Boost Efrain!

Maximus’ Nissan 370z

Maximus Y is from the valley and spent the day in San Jose with his wife while ZCG we tuned his 2014 370z. Max supplied the Power Package from Z1 Motorsports, consisting of test pipes, tubular exhaust headers and a modified upper intake manifold:

Since we had not installed these parts from Z1 before, we dyno tested them followed by UPREV tuning.

First, we installed the Z1 upper intake manifold:

Baseline before installation of the Power Package was 297hp/248tq at the wheels. The Z1 intake added ~5hp/6tq:

Next, the exhaust parts were installed. OEM vs Z1 exhaust headers:

OEM vs Z1 test pipes:

From the Z1 intake to headers/test pipes we saw gains of 20hp/13tq to the wheels. The dyno reveals significant mid to high rpm improvement:

Finally, Rob UPREV tuned for even more gains of 10hp making a total of 322hp/256tq to the wheels. An improvement over baseline of 30hp/14tq at the wheels:

We chatted with Max and with 27k miles on the odometer he will be visiting ZCG again to supercharge his Z! Stay tuned!

Scott’s 300zx Convertible

by Alvin G @ 3:04 pm on January 27, 2017

Scott N visited ZCG because he felt the suspension on his 1994 Z32 ‘Vert could be improved.  The Z33 Rays wheels look sharp on this 300! We installed TEIN coil-overs and a few other goodies:

Here are the existing shocks and the new TEIN street coil-overs going in front and rear:

Z1 upper control arms:

SPL tension rods so we could fully adjust camber up front:

The rack bushings are vey common problem on z32s so we replaced them. In the back: the aftermarket adjustable upper control arms were making noise so we replaced them with OEM parts and performed a full alignment.

Scott is super happy and Enjoying The Ride!

At Z Car Garage we love to help enthusiasts by installing customer-supplied parts. Eric R purchased these hot rod goodies online and came to us for installation on his 2014 370z:

Stillen Gen 3 Intakes are a proven way to increase mid to high-range power on the VQ37HR:

The 370Z has been discovered to suffer from high oil temps when exposed to extended periods of spirited driving. Once oil temps reach a specific temperature, the vehicle’s ECU will put itself into a “Limp Mode” cutting the power to the engine.  The solution? An engine oil cooler, this one is a great unit from Z1 Motorsports:

Stainless steel braided brakes lines can also help with pedal feel compared to the stock, rubber lines:

The perfect balance to improved intakes is to upgrade the exhaust side. Eric chose the TDX cat-back system from Fast Intentions. Aside from the power gains this carbon fiber muffler option also saves weight:

UPREV tuning maximizes power gains from these bolt-ons. The Stillen intakes and FI exhaust pushed power past the 300whp mark to 307hp/258tq at the wheels:

With UPREV tuning we extracted 10hp more to the wheels for total of 317hp/258tq, noticeable improvements in mid to high range hp and torque:
