On Saturday I took Mrs. Butters, our Series 1 shop 240z for a drive with fellow enthusiasts through some backroads to Carmel. It was a blast with fast roads, great cars and company. Enjoy our report with photo gallery below.

By 7:30am the South San Jose starting point was filled with cool cars. Our very own Cooper attended with his Datsun 260Z, now sporting a 3L L-series. More on his Overcrest Rally experience coming to zcarblog.com. The group was 13 deep with a nice mix Japanese, Euro and English marques…

The Cars

Four Porsche 911s of different vintage and modification level: Koich’s 1975 911 Hot Rod, Tony’s Aubergine 911 (began life as a Targa!), Cam’s G-Body 911 with 17″ Fuch-style wheels, and Michael’s lowered G-Body 911 SC:

B-sedans representing with Matt’s 1973 Alfa Romeo Giulia 1300 Super with a 2.0L swap and Geoff’s Cortina:

Glenn and Rei’s NA Miatas:

Alex’s Midnight Blue 370Z

Bob’s Noble M400. This thing is wicked

We made a short stop in Hollister where Pascal joined us in his ND Miata. From here we took 25 to King City. Got some good rolling shots with smiling drivers:

The scenery and topography is wildly contrasting to the Bay Area through 25 with rolling hills and farmland. Some great curvy stretches of road here.

Pit stop in King City where we somehow managed to get all 13 cars parallel parked in one block:

King City to Carmel via Carmel Valley Rd was another change in scenery and weather.

This was a very twisty stretch with some rough sections and wet surfaces from earlier rains. Still fun! Mrs. Butters’  3.2L with triple-Mikuni induction, Z Car Garage Big-BrakesZ Car Garage CV AxlesZCG Heat Shield, 6-speed transmission and full KW suspension all worked in harmony. The 3.54 rear end makes a huge difference in power delivery and cruising…80mph at just under 3500rpm!

Lunch at Baja Cantina, good food and great conversations!

Cooper and I got home via HWY 1 and 17. It was a wonderful driving day. Thanks to Alex and Glenn for organizing. Saw some familiar faces and met new folks sharing the same passion!

EVENTS: Super Drive Sunday

by Alvin G @ 8:29 pm on February 8, 2021

On Sunday I joined a group of vintage sedans for the Super Drive event in Pacifica, CA.  Now in its 16th year, SuperDrive Sunday is a single day road rally open to any and all vintage vehicles. Our friend Geoff assembled a group of classic cars I couldn’t help resist calling the “B-sedan Squad”. These models were competing in the heated vintage race groups of the late 60’s/70’s: I drove Rob Fuller’s 1971 Datsun 510, Geoff in his Inka BMW 2002, Cameron in a BMW Neue Klasse 1800, Ramon and Chris in their Alfa Romeo Berlina 1750/2000, and Diego in the E30. We left San Jose headed to Sea Bowl via 280N:

Rob’s Datsun 510 with S13 SR20DET sporting Go-Green paint and 14″ Panasports:

Euro Vibes

The scene at the pre-rally gathering was filled with cool cars, mostly Euro/Italian. I’m always on the hunt for Japanese metal and spotted an S30, ITR and Mitsubishi 3000GT. I was the lone Datsun 510.

There were at least 9 Alfa Romeo Berlina/Giulia sedans of all years. These are very pretty, capable vintage saloons. Many Alfa GTVs and Giulia Spiders:

More cool cars, some I’ve never seen before. like this Fiat Abarth 750 “Double-Bubble”:

A few familiar favorites:

Rad wheels abound too!

Let’s Drive!

The group left Sea Bowl and headed south on scenic HWY1 with great weather and good company. Geoff and I split off from HWY 1 for a blast up Tunitas up to 35/Skyline. This was a fun stretch and I had to focus and keep the 510’s boost in check through the twisty bits!

From 35 we made a quick stop at Alice’s Restaurant. It was pleasant to see everyone enjoying their cars. We even ran into our friends like Naveed and met Alex, organizer of the Berkeley Cars and Coffee.

Alex (in his Berlina) joined myself, Chris and Geoff for a stretch down HWy 9 to Boulder Creek.

From Boulder Creek we ended the trip with a drive to 17 via Bear Creek Rd. This is a very technical section, again mostly free of traffic so we could have fun! All had a great time and I highly recommend getting out next Super Bowl Sunday to Super Drive! #DOITINADATSUN

We are stoked to see our friend Eric Straw and his 1969 Datsun Roadster featured in Speedhunters. Check out the article HERE.

We loved tuning Eric’s RB26DETT powered DR30 Skyline, so look for a dyno report soon as we tune the Haltech ECU on this SR22VET powered beauty!

Great Drives: Mt. Umunhum to Alice’s Restaurant

“Great Drives” is a Zcarblog series highlighting scenic routes and destinations we have enjoyed from the past and present. Whether it is a nice cruise or thrilling adventure, we hope to inspire Bay Area vintage car owners to Enjoy The Ride! Have a great drive of your own that you want to share? Feel free to contact us on Facebook, Instagram or by e-mail.

Mt. Umunhum to Alice’s Restaurant, October 2018

There are several fun routes reaching Alice’s from San Jose. This drive was organized by Lotus 7 owner Geoff W and we all met in Almaden to begin:

The 11-car group was diverse with both vintage and modern sports cars with great Nissan/Datsun representation!

The cars:

Daniel’s Nissan 240s (S13) with an RB25DET swap. He is the man behind the lens of BayRoadsAP. Naveed Yousufzai’s R32 Skyline GT-R:

Lane Skelton of DrivingWhileAwesome in his Porsche 944. Eric in the 911 Targa

TWO Z cars! Michael’s Series 1 240z (with patina) and Andrew’s Series 1 Fairlady Z (RHD!)

Geoff (organizer) in his Lotus 7, featured on Petrolicious! Mike in his 993 Porsche:

Matt in his Subaru BRZ Performance Pack, Brendan and Drew in their Chevy SS sedans, and myself in the Datsun Roadster.

The route:

Driving through Almaden to Mt. Umunhum:

The climb up to the peak is filled with freshly paved road and switchbacks. At the top:

In the lower lot we had a few minutes to chat and check out the cars

I really dig Michael’s S30, it has a warmed-over triple-carb’d L-series:

We left Mt. Umunhum towards 17 and exited on Bear Creek Rd. for lunch in Boulder Creek. This was a fun stretch I haven’t been on.

Heading up 9 to 35. It was fun chasing Michael in the Z:

We had a little scare when his oil pressure gauge started reading low….it checked it ok and we were off again:

The route changed a bit and we took Alpine Rd. (lots of loose gravel) to Pescadero Creek Rd, then Stage Rd. After re-grouping we hopped on HWY 1N:

From 1 we turned right onto 84. This stretch was amazing. SO much fun connecting the turns and chasing Geoff in the Lotus. This is a road that made me love my roadster even more. Thanks Geoff for an exhilarating drive!

All of the Roadsters at Alice’s Restaurant. An “Aero Cycle” joined:

We also got a closer look at Geoff’s go-kart. One look at the driver’s seat tells all: this is a wild ride!

After drinks we departed. Alice’s never disappoints.

Here’s video I snapped showing the action, enjoy!

After drinks we split up for home, and i took 35 back down 9. I was treated to some great coastal and bay arae views:

Big thanks to Geoff for organizing the drive. It was a fantastic run with great company! More pictures in the gallery below.
