Datsuns Vintage Racing Report!

by Alvin G @ 10:35 am on March 24, 2013

On Saturday 3/23 we drove our Datsun 510s (and an R32 Skyline) to Laguna Seca to catch the B-sedan vintage races. It was a beautiful sunny day filled with sights, sounds and smells of motorsport.  Our caravan included Kurt in the Strutless Wonder, Tom in the Datsun 510 wagon, Matt in his
Turbo 510, I drove the Turbo Box Flare 510, and Rob in the Skyline:

When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised at the number of Datsuns in the paddock. I took shots of engine bays, suspension, and interiors to get your juices flowing(see gallery):

Wayne McAtee and Troy Ermish

Mark Bowen, Dave Stone and multiple cars from socal

Adam Carolla drove the Datsun 510 guest driver(Bobby Allison) car:

Les Cannaday of CDM debuted their latest restoration: a Datsun 610 race car!

Les’ Datsun 1200 and the Frisselle 240z IMSA car:

This Bluebird coupe was also a treat to watch on the track:

We anxiously awaited the B-sedan qualifying laps and race at 10am and 2pm. It was amazing to see all of the Datsuns out there:

Thanks to Tom Dockery for these pictures below:

Here is a short video clip of the B-sedan race starting with Datsuns, Alfas, and BMWs:

One of the most exciting battles was between Troy Ermish (#38 510) and Jon Norman (#58 Alfa). These two mixed it up for the first handful of laps until Troy’s 510 had a suspension failure. Watch this short video clip  from Turn 4…both cars foot to the floor and within inches of each other!

Of course the paddock is like a candy store for any gearhead with plenty of high dollar, rare and eclectic automobiles… like the track-prepped 300SL and  ’59 Porsche 356A with a very trick 911 4-cylinder(yup, not a typo!)…check the gallery for plenty of pictures:

We commend all of the drivers and crew members for keeping the Datsun racing spirit alive!

Francisco M met Rob at the Contra Costa Cruise last month where they discussed adding some bolt-on performance parts to his G35 coupe. The following day Francisco made an appointment and soon his G was treated to a host of go-fast goodies. From left to right: Motordyne plenum spacer, CF intake manifold, Motordyne XYZ pipe, Motordyne straight pipe, Amuse R1-T 3″ Titanium exhaust system and ART test pipes…

Let’s take a closer look at that pretty Titanium Amuse muffler+Motordyne exhaust combo:

ART pipes:

Plenum spacer:

Spacer + intake installed:

The G also got front/rear sway bars:

Stay tuned as Francisco comes back to ZCG next week for an UPREV tune to take advantage of all these cool bolt-ons!

Chris M came to ZCG with only an aftermarket intake system on his 370z. With UPREV tuning the VQ37 now makes 305hp/254tq to the wheels:

If you have intake/exhaust modifications to your Z consider an UPREV tune to realize their full potential!
