TUNING: Gentry’s Nismo 370Z

by Alvin G @ 5:10 pm on June 11, 2021

Gentry Stein visited Z Car Garage from Chico, CA for dyno tuning on his V1 Nismo 370Z.  We specialize in UPREV and EcuTek Tuning to maximize power gains from individual modifications like intake and exhaust upgrades. Gentry contacted us before searching for the right Nismo Z34 and eventually found this super clean V1, #528:

On the dyno, Rob Uprev tuned the Z making great mid-range to redline gains. Peak gains of 9hp/7tq for a total of 322hp/267tq at the wheels:

Gentry is thrilled with the power gains:

“My experience at ZCG was absolutely awesome! Rob’s passion for Z’s can truly be felt while at ZCG. I felt confident knowing my car was in the best possible place it could be to get dyno tuned. Rob even took videos of the car for me while it was on the dyno. The car made great power throughout the whole powerband, and it’s even more of a blast to drive now! The throttle feels alive, and the torque gain is really felt from 4K-6.5k RPM. I’m excited every time I sit in the drivers seat of my Z.”

Yo-Yo World Champion

Fun fact: Gentry is the World Champion of Yo-yo. He provides some insight into his desire for a 370Z and career in Yo-yo playing:

“In early 2020 I was specifically looking for a V1 Nismo Z34 in white. I wanted a car that I could daily drive and also take through canyons and coastal roads. I don’t care about a fancy interior with luxurious amenities. I wanted something that looks sexy and is fun to drive, and to me that’s an exact description of this car. Ive driven some other popular cars, but this car feels rewarding on a different level. I love what they did with the body kit of the Nismo too. You know you have the right car when you can’t help but look back at it every time you get out of it.

My Z story really starts with my love for Japan. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Japan 5 times over the last 6 years for work and play, and have developed some incredible friendships that have allowed me to experience Japanese culture and values. I started playing with yoyos when I was 8 years old, which is when I met one of my mentors who is from Japan. From then to now as I’ve turned that passion into a career, much of my success is due to what I learned from that mentor as well as my other connections and experiences in Japan. The month preceding winning my first World Yo-yo Championship was spent training in Nagoya and Tokyo. I experienced the special level of care that goes into everything in Japan, whether it’s design, food, human interaction, work ethic, etc… This has played a major role in inspiring me and helping me develop into the person I am today. This level of care is also felt in their Z cars when looking at and driving them. I have such a respect and appreciation for Japan and their culture, and I feel proud to drive a car that was born from the same place as many of the building blocks to my own life success.

As for my goals with the Z, I plan to continue to drive the hell out of it. I’ve put 15,000 miles on the car in my first 10 months of ownership. It’s literally been 15 thousand miles of fun and I’m looking forward to more of that. I’m pretty content with the way the car is setup. The car is riding on KW V3 suspension, has a Wavetrac limited slip differential, polyurethane differential bushings, K&N drop in air filters, Motordyne Shockwave exhaust, and special sauce from the fresh Z Car Garage tune. I also just did a full paint correction and ceramic coat myself to keep the car looking as good as it drives.

Thanks Z car garage for being part of my car’s story!”

Vince S called Z Car Garage after he scored this 1973 Datsun 240Z from our friends at Bring a Trailer. After we got the Z up here from SoCal we found that it needed some work for Vince to really Enjoy The Ride. Our Z Car Garage Big-Brakes and Z Car Garage CV Axles along with a full suspension refresh and engine tuning make it just right.

Z Destiny

Before we explore the upgrades, let’s take a look at how Vince found his Z car…

“I’m incredibly lucky to own my Z. It was sold new in Decatur, IL on August 10, 1973. The car was supposedly purchased from the 2nd owner who reportedly had it for over 30 years in 2018 by a dealer in Oakland who then sold it to the collector I bought it from. I first saw the car in 2019 parked in my neighbor’s driveway. At the time, I was looking for a 240Z to buy. In high school I had a 1978 280Z that I took to college but it was prone to overheating and I blew a head gasket and didn’t have the money to fix it. I sold it in 1990 and regretted it ever since. So, when I saw a 1973 240Z sitting in that driveway, I knocked on my neighbor’s door and asked if he wanted to sell it.”

“Turns out the Z didn’t belong to him. He was transporting it from Oakland to Carmel and then on to L.A. for a friend who was a collector. The friend already owned two 240Zs (he has one of the 37 Zs that were part of Nissan’s Vintage Restoration Program) and he wanted my Z for it’s a/c components and other bits to complete one of his cars (he later decided it was too good of a car to use for parts). Although I couldn’t buy my Z that day, my neighbor let me go for a quick drive around the block. Fast forward to April 2020 and that very same Z is being auctioned on Bring a Trailer.”

Vince watched the auction, confirming with the seller that it was the same car he had driven. Although he was outbid, 20 minutes after the auction ended the seller informed Vince that the winner backed out. They agreed on a price and he became the proud new owner of the 240Z.

Chassis and Suspension Upgrades

With Vince’s Z finally at the shop we proceeded with upgrades to make it a fantastic, reliable driver. For our clients that are cruising with occasional “spirited” driving we installed our “Stage 1/light street” suspension.  New parts from Techno Toy Tuning included adjustable T/C rods and rear lower control arms. We really appreciate Gabriel and his staff at T3. They make some of the best suspension parts out there for Z cars.

A full front suspension rebuild included new rack bushings, front control arm bushings, ball-joints, tie-rods, new wheel bearings front and rear (OEM genuine Nissan seals/parts), KYB strut inserts, Eibach lowering springs trimmed Macpherson bumps stops for full travel and a ST sway bar set.

ZCG Big-Brakes and CV Axles

Brakes: every vintage Z car that we build here gets the ultimate setup: our Z Car Garage Big-Brakes for small wheels.  Everyone that drives our 1971 Series 1 240z shop demo car is sold on our Z Car Garage Big-Brakes  and Z Car Garage CV Axles! Butters has a way of doing this to our customers 🙂 Read below for a brief description of these parts:

As fellow S30 owner/racer Glenn C mentioned in his review, on top of braking performance, pedal feel is extremely important and our Big-Brakes deliver. This is a direct result of working with engineers at Stoptech to create a totally bolt-in solution requiring no M/C change or additional proportioning valve/adjustments. All fitting behind a 15″ Watanabe or Panasport wheel (and some 14″ wheels) and retaining factory emergency brake lever! A few details below: Calipers: Stoptech ST42 4-piston front & rear race calipers (Alum 6061 mil-spec Type III anodized) Rotors: 280mm x 20.6 with Alum 7075 hats Pads: Stoptech 309 sport street pads Blog posts documenting all of our customers running the ZCG Big-Brakes can be found HERE. A few closer detail shots of the calipers, rotors and hardware:

We removed Vince’s brakes and installed our ZCG Big-Brake kit with a new brake master cylinder from Nissan, rebuilt brake booster and parking brake assembly.

New brake master cylinder from Nissan and stock vs Big-Brakes:

At the rear, the factory drum brakes were replaced with our ZCG Big-Brakes. Factory handbrake functionality IS retained!

Our Z Car Garage CV Axles help transmit power to the ground and ensure smoother operation compared to your standard half shafts. We have over 90 CV axle kits on customer cars and we are stoked with all of the positive feedback.

Vince has CV Axle set #341. Stock half shafts (L) and ZCG units:

ZCG CV axles installed:

Panasport Wheels

Complementing the new springs and shocks on Vince’s Z are Panasport wheels! We replaced the stock steel wheels (kept for shows) with 16×7 Panasports and Continental Extreme Contact Sport tires in 225/50/16.

Drivetrain

We performed a full drivetrain inspection with compression/leakdown test to make sure the engine was healthy. A list of items that were addressed/replaced: sparks plugs, new plug wire set, fuel filter, valve cover gasket, valve adjustment, MSA 6 to 1 header to our ZCG exhaust system and Z therapy carbs. More pictures in the gallery!

A Koyo race aluminum radiator replaced the stock unit:

All coolant hoses were replaced, new water pump, fan clutch, fan blade, all new drive belts, new battery hold-down/cables and a e…we even lubed chokes cable everything to make this car a solid driver… everything to allow Vince to just hop in to his vintage Z and enjoy some back roads. The aging 4-speed transmission was replaced with a 5-speed from our parts stash.

This early 280z 5-speed. came in the 1977-78 S30s and has the same gearset with an 0.86 overdrive perfect for the factory rear end. Our go-t0 JWT alum flywheel/clutch back the engine:

Dyno Tuning

With fresh Z Therapy carbs and MSD Blaster 2 coil with Pertronix ignition Rob set the AFR/timing for best performance and drivability. Rob dyno tuned the L24, now making 138hp/139tq at the wheels:

Vince is throughly impressed and happy with all of the chassis and engine upgrades:

“My experience with Rob and ZCG has been exceptional. When I bought my Z, it was essentially stock with the exception of one or two paint resprays of the 113 green and an added electric fuel pump. It was clear the car had a fair amount of deferred maintenance, I knew I needed to improve both its drivability and reliability.  So, I upgraded to the ZCG Big Brakes, ZCG CV axles, did a full suspension rebuild and drivetrain refresh.  Well worth the wait…The Z I picked up was nothing like the Z I dropped off — it was better in every way.”

Enjoying the Ride

We loved to hear that Vince is out an about with his Z. He attended the Valt gathering in Albany where our friend Geoff snapped these pictures. He also just completed a rally with Breakfast Club Rally group:

“The 2nd best road trip was a recent 100 mile rally in the east bay foothills and my daughter rode with me for that as well. She shares my love of cars and passion for Zs. It reminds me of the times I shared with my dad who could fix anything on wheels and for years owned his own repair shop. That’s why this Z is so important. As much as I appreciate the beauty of its design and brilliance of its engineering, it’s the memories I have and will make that I cherish most”

Welcome Back to the Z car family!

“My Z performs far better than I expected. I just did my first 100-mile rally and had complete confidence that the car would go, turn and stop like I needed and expected it to. This isn’t my first Z but it’s my first 240 and first major mechanical refresh of a car. As they say, “you don’t know what you don’t know,” so I really valued (and needed) Rob’s experience and advice. My Z means a lot to me (my daughters joke that she’s the favorite in the family) and it was important to do things right. It’s not that money wasn’t an object but I was willing to invest in the things that mattered most, which is what Rob and the crew helped me do.”

Thank you for your support and we loved working with you Vince!  Happy that you are a Z car owner again, welcome back to the family and LONG LIVE THE Z!

SERIEZ 1: Wayne’s 1971 Datsun 240Z

Filed under: 240z,Featured Cars and Projects,Performance
by Alvin G @ 5:10 pm on May 12, 2021

Wayne A came to Z Car Garage for a full inspection on his 1971 Datsun 240Z. Rebello built him a nice engine and now he needed the right suspension and parts to enjoy that new drivetrain upgrade. Rob and Wayne developed a plan for a total suspension refresh.

The Right Z

Let’s take a look at how Wayne got his “SERIEZ 1” S30 that he’s owned for the past ten years:

“My neighbor had a slew of 240z and 510s. I stopped by and asked him about his cars. I told him I specifically wanted an orange 1972 Datsun 240z. One day on my way home I saw this car out in front of his house. I was amazed when I saw it. It had slotted wheels with BF Goodrich tires and was lowered quite a bit. I had asked him about it and he said he just got back from Oregon to purchase it with intentions to flip it for a really good price. I bought it that day from him.

Here is Wayne’s Z as it arrived at Z Car Garage:

The Rebello 3L stroker with triple FAJS 45 induction backed by a 5-speed transmission:

Enjoy this video of the Z in action:

Suspension

Wayne’s chassis was treated to a full suspension rebuild with new parts, bushings and a full coil-over (Koni) suspension from Techno Toy Tuning. T3 finishes the suspension in our signature color and we really appreciate Gabriel and his staff. They make some of the best suspension parts out there for Z cars.

New parts included the T3 adjustable T/C rods, T3 rear control arms, T3 front/rear strut tower bars, new ball joints, new front bushings, all new bearings and seals and ST sway bars. New Macpherson bumps were trimmed for best ride quality and full travel followed by a full alignment.

Front suspension refresh with T3 coil-overs, T/C rods, ST sway bars, rack bushings and f/r wheel bearings.

We also installed a new set of Watanabe wheels (15×8) with 225/50/15 Toyo R888R tires:

Enjoying The Ride

With new suspension and wheels Wayne immediately took his Z out, sharing his joy with family. We thank his nephew for sending us photos from their drive. More pictures in the gallery below!

Wayne is really happy with the upgrades:

“It drives worlds better. Rob did an incredible job with the suspension. I couldn’t be happier! It went from scary to drive to where I can’t wait to get in and drive it now.”

Wayne and Rob met, developed a plan, made a quote, got all the parts here and his car came in on Tuesday leaving on Friday. Pretty cool for a 50yr -old car to get a major performance upgrade in short time. Thanks for letting us work on your SERIEZ 1. Next up Wayne, brakes! Long Live the Z!

We love to see owners installing our Z Car Garage CV Axles on their Datsuns. Chris M recently performed the installation himself on his 1970 240Z. You may have seen this Safari Gold Series 1 beauty at events in the Atlanta area or online features. We are proud to be part of it!

Our Z Car Garage CV Axles help transmit power to the ground and ensure smoother operation compared to your standard half shafts. We have over 130 CV axle kits on customer cars and we are stoked with all of the positive feedback.

Chris has CV axle set #0353 and we are happy to report that he installed them himself with ease:

“Install was a breeze, old axles come out, these new ones go right in in their place. Couldn’t ask for an easier installation.”

He sent us a few pictures of the unboxing and before/after replacing his old half-shafts. Nice work Chris!

Simple and Satisfying

Chris’ Z is not a fully-restored example. Aside from the paint he’s gone through the entire car making it an ultra-clean driver that is still show-worthy. The stance is achieved through full air-suspension. It was one of the first S30s to be on airbags, gracefully tucking those gorgeous 15×9 Work Equip 01s:

The engine remains an L-series with triple-Weber 45DCOE’s and 10:25:1 CR ported E31 head on a stock 280Z bottom end. We do love his choice of Fujitsubo Legalis exhaust.

Listen to it sing:

Chris’ Z and the great story behind it has been told many times we encourage you to read his Petrolicious and Speedhunters features.

Datsun/Enthusiast

Chris loves his Nissan/Datsuns but also enjoys other marques as an enthusiast. Check out his R32 Skyline GT-R, 280Z (bought by his uncle brand new in 1978, and has been in the family since) and R30 Skyline 4-door!

We’ve been following Chris on Instagram for years and met him at SEMA and when he visited Rob at our shop. Stoked to see a fellow Georgian and be a part of his Z car journey. Thank you Chris for your support and we are happy to see you Enjoying The Ride (and CV axles)! Enjoy the photo gallery below
