Don’s 1992 Nissan 300zx Twin Turbo

Filed under: Featured Cars and Projects,Maintenance,Performance

Don T is the long time owner of this 1992 Nissan 300zx Twin Turbo finished in one of our favorite Z32 shades, Sapphire Blue:

Don felt the need to find a Z car enthusiast shop and last summer he visited Z Car Garage for routine maintenance on this 34k original-mile beauty. We offered our inspection services because he’s a new customer. During the inspection we fixed his coolant temp sensor, allowing the gauge to show correct coolant temperature.

We performed a full 60k service including timing belt replacement. Whenever we do the timing belt service, everything proximal to this is taken care of so you don’t need to come back for another 60k miles.

Timing belt service parts and front end coming off:

Old vs new timing belt:

The factory T/C rod is a sore spot on the Z32. Silicon gel that is inside the bushing leaks out after the T/C develop cracks.

To give the Z a precise steering feel we only use SPL T/C rods. We also replaced the rack bushings and performed a full alignment:

The one thing that totally sets this whole car off (besides the pristine status and Sapphire paint) is one of my favorite wheels of all time, those Manaray Sport MS-6s.

These wheels are 90’s rad with their 3-piece construction, 6 spokes and exposed hardware. They look so good rolling in 17×8/9 sizes. Let’s not forget those super intense locking center caps!

We might be biased but we feel the Z32 is the best Japanese sports car of the 90’s. Keeping them on the road is our passion and even in 2019 there are still some real gems out there. Thanks for bringing your 300 to us Don!

To our dear Zcarblog readers, our last few posts have been throwbacks as we catch up on customer projects. Please be patient we want to share your stories with our followers. We appreciate any/all feedback and suggestions, let Z Car Garage be your shop! Long Live The Z!

Neal’s 1972 Datsun 240z

Neal D brought his 1972 Datsun 240z to Z Car Garage after being restored by a shop in SoCal last summer.   He wanted us to get this 918 Orange beauty running correctly and double-check the workmanship performed so we happily obliged.

The Z had several issues that we resolved after a thorough inspection. Starting with the braking system, we corrected and re-routed all hydraulic lines. The front and rear circuits were swapped on the brake master cylinder, we corrected this as well. The pin from the brake booster to the M/C was adjusted to enable a good initial “bite” from the pedal. Our usual ZCG brake services included Stoptech 309 pads. Finally, we bled the system and adjusted the rear brakes correctly.

The transmission had to be removed to correct issues in the clutch area. We found stripped bolts, a mis-adjusted clutch pedal, and incorrect T/O bearing collar hardware:

Moving down the drivetrain, we found and corrected improper hardware on the half shafts:

We nut/bolted the entire car, correcting all suspension issues like improperly lubed bushings. More detail work: the wiper system beneath the cowl was setup incorrectly being 180 degrees out.

A critical part was missing from the fuel system: the vapor tank. We removed the fuel tank and replaced all vapor lines with our ZCG aftermarket hose kit:

The missing vapor tank was re-installed and the entire system was smoke tested to confirm proper sealing. A full fuel tank was also included in our testing:

Neal wanted the car back on the road in top driving condition. We installed an O2 bung into the exhaust and street tuned the Z after adding a Pertronix ignition. The Z was dialed-in and ready to rock:

Neal has owned this Z for many years but also loves his Porsche 911. When we met at Rennsport we gave each other that look: P-car or Z-car we both Enjoy The Ride! Thanks for bringing your Z to us!

George’s 1972 Datsun 240z

George S returned to ZCG for a few items on his 57k-mile survivor S30. Here is a brief history on the Z:

George owned a 1971 Datsun 240z back in 80’s, sold it in the 90’s and recently tracked the car down to its current owner in Atlanta. Sadly, after all those years the Z wasn’t in the greatest shape (2013):

I purchased it in August 1981 with 75,000 miles from a single girl in the Marina District. It was my every day car for 10 years, putting on an additional 75k miles. Along the way added the Enkei gold rims, added a Monza exhaust system which was popular then and re-painted it in 1990(similar shade, but not the Datsun blue)

Serviced it regularly and never had to do anything other than the basics. She ran like a charm, was never in an accident.

Sold it in 1991 to a guy I worked with who drove it back to Tennessee a short while later. Thought about the car often, but had no info on it until the guy in Atlanta called me in October 2013. Think he said the car had about 190k miles.

George, obviously missing his Z car after tracking it down had considered restoring it and consulted with us at ZCG. It turns out that Rob actually knew the current owner in Atlanta and the two discussed the Z’s state of repair. Rob felt that it was one of those cars that would be difficult to stay ahead of the curve on. The recommendation: buy an S30 that’s ready to drive, and that’s exactly what George did…

In 2016 George picked up a 1972 240z with an automatic transmission in SoCal. We were impressed with its super low 57k miles, original paint and stunning red interior.

Once it arrived at ZCG we went on and corrected issues with braking system and fixed front suspension parts. We found a really clean set of Series 2 wheel covers to replace the later units and really made the car standout proper.

George recently came in for more sorting, paint correction and passenger mirror replacement. In the engine bay, a Pertronix ignition was installed and timing set to ensure the car ran perfectly.

Moving to that gorgeous red interior, the shift handle was replaced:

The exterior was treated to some dent removal and paint matching on body panels. The previous owner installed a black aftermarket passenger mirror:

We removed the black part and installed our favorite mirror:

This Z is a great example of how a stock car can be updated and maintained to bring many smiles per gallon. Enjoy The Ride, George!

Mr. K’s 1972 Datsun 240z

by Alvin G @ 12:41 pm on January 11, 2019

We are very excited to have Mr. K’s 1972 Datsun 240z at the shop! Yutaka Katayama (affectionately known as “Mr. K”) put Datsun on the map while serving as President of Nissan Motors USA.

This Z was Mr. K’s personal car, with touches like the “G-Nose”, custom mix Yellow Pearl Paint, wire wheels and automatic transmission. It was most prominently featured in Nissan’s multi-million dollar Datsun Heritage advertising campaign in the late 90’s.  Check it out in this Super Bowl Ad – “The Dream Garage” lead a series of T.V. commercials featuring Mr. K (played by an actor):

In 1977 Mr. K retired and before returning to Japan he gave the Z to his long time Administrative Assistant, Johnnie Gable and her son Kenny Ueda. The family still owns it to this day, driving to many events and Enjoying The Ride.  Johnnie contacted Z Car Garage to bring the Z in for some TLC. We are honored to have this national treasure at the shop and look forward to getting it back on the road!

If you listen closely, you can almost hear it whisper the words of Mr. K’s simple philosophy, “Love cars. Love people. Love life.”

Nissan Dream Garage: Every 65 years or so, we gather the family together for a picture.

Thank you Johnnie and Kenny for making the trip from Southern California, Long Live The Z!
