Dan F is long time customer of Z Car Garage and we started working with him shortly after he acquired his Nissan 350z. Dan comes from a family of motorsports enthusiasts with his Dad (C6 Corvette) and brothers all enjoying track time together:

 

In 2012 we installed a Vortech Supercharger and for the next five years Dan regularly tracked this Z33. We fought with oil/water temperature and anything you can think of battling while at the track. Where there was an issue, a solution was devised so he could beat on this Z for 20-30minute sessions easily.

Better, Stronger and Faster


In 2017 with 53k miles on the odometer the factory engine failed in Turn 1 at Laguna Seca. We were at a crossroads: with all the developments we made so Dan’s Z could handle routine track duty should we push the envelope by adding even more power?

 

The answer, invariably was YES. At the heart of the new build was a Rebello VQ with HR top end and internals including forged pistons and rods, HR head gaskets and headbolts, race bearings, factory compression ratio, JWT C8 cams and JWT HD valve springs:

 

The major power added was a new Vortech Si wheel offering more hp per pound of boost. Supporting mods included DC sports carb legal headers, EV14 1000c injectors, GT MAF and upgraded fuel pump. Keeping things cool are new oil coolers and a revised ZCG cold-air intake:

 
 

The front-mount intercooler was upgraded to an ATP Garrett 900hp unit:

 

To monitor intercooler efficiency a gauge was installed in the factory cubicle displaying temperature before and after the IC:

Dyno Tuning

 

With the engine bay all buttoned up Rob dyno tuned the Z using UPREV. The Z is now making 480hp/390tq at the wheels on a conservative track tune to keep heat low. The dyno plots show the previous 91 octane tune (368hp/333tq) and newest 91 octane tune (455hp/365tq):

 

More Track Mods

 

An off at Thunderhill gave Dan an opportunity re-engineered his aero pieces. He rebuilt the front splitter, added side blades, rear diffuser and front fender slats:

 “For the brake ducts I repurposed old Roush Nascar ducts in dry carbon with standard ducting. The front splitter with spats I made to attach to the Stillen piece. The spats are tied in up the fender to prevent turbulence with the tire as it’s running a 295 front with -3.6 degrees camber.”

 

“The rear lower diffuser I made from aluminum and marine grade plastic. It has gold heat shielding to protect it from the exhaust, while the bumper diffuser is made by an engineering student down at Cal Poly.”

 

The front fender vents needed some work to fit:

“I know an engineer who did CAD and outsourced on a group buy. Problem is they are for a 370 and while the outer contour measures the same, the inner distance to the frame rail is less. I didn’t know that until we cut the first hole in the fender! So what was a piece with slats all the way through, I modified to make it shallower and then did the screen to close it off. They are dry carbon as well.”

 

Dan visited us for exhaust modifications to pass sound restrictions at Laguna Seca. The suspension was also checked and refreshed to keep up with the engine including new SPL lower front control arm bushings.

 

Stoptech, or Don’t Stop At All

 

After having an issue in Turn 2 with his AP Racing brakes we installed a Stoptech Trophy Kit utilizing ST60 calipers and 355x32mm rotors:

After the last few years we are happy to report that Dan has happily accumulated 12k miles on the new build. In addition to being a good driver he is a great guy and we enjoyed being a part of his journey. Enjoy these comments below from Rob and Dan, respectively:

“It is special to me that relationships last long. Dan could easily go out and buy the latest fastest sports car, but he likes to do it for the build. It really has Dan F. written all over it. I love when he texts updates from the track. With 500hp+ and to run a session without a hitch is awesome.”

“Rob has been part of the heart and soul of this car as he has helped me build it over the last 10 years. It has been a guinea pig at times to try new methods but he has been a great partner and sponsor through all of it. It’s very fast and very fun being quite easy to handle at the limit. It is maintained for track duty at ZCG.”

Our shared excitement is seeing Dan making personal bests at the track.  Dan is fast and here are a few notable times and achivements at his favorite tracks, we are proud of him!

“I’m still looking for time to break 1:40 at Laguna Seca, currently at….140.7 and 123.7 at Thunder Hill West. I’ve consistently run in the top 10 of 100 with Santa Clara Corvette Club AX’s”

 

 
 

We have even seen Dan on the street at the local 2018 ZONC Annual Car Show and cruising twisty Bay Area roads near Alice’s restaurant:

Salvador’s 370z

Salvador visited us for a dyno tune with EcuTek on his 2018 370z.

 

The dyno shows significant gains in power/tq making 314hp/264tq to the wheels:

 

James’ 350z

James visited ZCG for an UPREV tune on his 2003 350z.

 

The Z responded really well to the dyno tuning session, making 256hp/257tq at the wheels. We also re-located James’ steering-mounted controls to allow map switching.

 

Z Car Garage offers the ARC(Advanced Racing Controls) license. This add-on service to the existing UPREV Flash allows you to have adjustable launch control, burnout mode, and flat-foot shifting for $150. This is for cars with manual transmission, VDC/cruise control. Call Rob for more details!

 

Malcolm’s 350z

Malcolm’s Z came to us with a tune by another shop. It was E-tuned and Malcolm reported that it just didn’t feel right.

 

After UPREV tuning he picked up 13hp/10tq making 309hp/272tq to the wheels:

Josh’s Supercharged Nissan 350z

At Z Car Garage we live for anything Nissan/Datsun and that includes late model cars like the 350z. The Z33 has been part of our customer base since the beginning, spanning everything from NA and forced induction to full track-spec builds. Josh visited us last year to discuss supercharging his 2008 350z. He acquired it completely stock 3 years ago and slowly began the modification process.

 

Josh signed on for a Stillen supercharger kit (satin, CARB legal) and we installed it with our typical supporting mods like GTR plugs, and Concept Performance Z 25-row oil cooler  (Setrab, T-stat controlled).

 

The front end needed work to accomodate Josh’s front crash bar. We shifted items around like the water-air exchanger to retain functionality:

 

Josh also requested installation of parts he had purchased previously like Tomei cams/valve springs for the HR engine. These units worked really well with the blower as seen in the dyno below. A few cam install pictures:

 

The transmission was crunchy in 3rd and 5th gear so we installed a brand new OEM CD009 transmission:

 

Backing the VQ is a Z Speed Performance South Bend stage 2 clutch with internal slave delete (CMAK upgrade):

 

For piece of mind we replaced all engine gaskets and seals:

 

The differential bushings were replaced with Whiteline parts:

 

Before/after the Stillen Supercharger installation:

 

On the dyno the Z made 286hp/252tq baseline. Rob UPREV tuned with the Stillen supercharger making 427hp/311tq at the wheels:

Finally, we had our man William install Josh’s supplied carbon fiber hood, fenders and hood pins.

 

Josh was really happy with the results and he’s been texting us often:

“I brought in my base model 350z to Rob to get it Supercharged, cammed, and a transmission swap. I was pleased with Rob and the teams work, they knew what was needed for the build. The tune is excellent, I haven’t had any issues with engine codes after excessive driving.”

Last week we had the pleasure of dyno tuning Eric Straw’s magnificent 1969 Datsun 2000 Roadster. Eric is a long time friend of Z Car Garage and we  first dyno’d this roadster in 2012 while a few years later we enjoyed tuning his RB26DETT powered DR30 Skyline. In addition to being a talented fabricator it is clear that Eric has a penchant for white paint, red valve covers…and turbocharged Nissan powerplants!

 

SR20 Roadster: Version 2

 

After restoring his roadster with an S13 SR20DET drivetrain a decade ago, Eric started working on the next evolution with a totally revised chassis and new engine (the previous setup sold for a customer’s roadster).  The new drivetrain consists of an S14 block (JE pistons, K1 rods, P12 oil pump) with a P11 VVL head (Kelford turbo cams, Tomei cam gears, Taarks VVL relocation kit, R35 coil packs) all mounted to the roadster frame using a Spriso Motorsports HD motor mount kit.

 

Providing boost is a GTX3071r turbo with Tial exhaust housing mounted to a Straw-fab’d custom tubular manifold with CNC 1 piece collector. On the cold side is a custom intercooler with Garrett core and custom intake manifold. It’s both pretty and functional considering the roadster’s tiny engine bay:

 

Backing the SR20VE-T is a 6-speed (CD009) transmission normally seen in the Nissan 350z. The SR mounts to the tranny via a Mazworx bell housing with an OS Giken Twin disk. The shining star in Eric’s craftsmanship is the chassis preparation with a heavily modified frame with tubular x-member and bolt-in reinforcements.

Dyno Tuning

 

The tuning session was conducted with driveability and longevity in mind. Outright peak power numbers were not a priority. Eric’s hometown in Salem, Oregon is where this car would be enjoyed with premium fuel and the occasional 100 octane splash.  Surely more power could be extracted with E85 but Eric is 50 miles from nearest station. Rob comments on the choice of engine management for the SR20VE-T:

“When Eric contacted us about about building the SR20VVL we discussed EMS, and ZCG is a Haltech Pro Tuner. We really like how user-friendly this product is for a tuner. It’s perfect when you need to map out all of the different phases, complete control of ignition/fueling, cam control, idle air…everything to take this car you’ve dreamed of and make it drive like it came from an OEM factory.”

 

Rob dyno tuned the SR equipped with a Haltech 1500 Elite. Initial passes were performed on 92 octane. The plots below show without a boost controller (387hp/287tq) and with a boost controller, making 425hp/331tq to the wheels:

 

Of note is Nissan’s wonderful variable valve timing (VVL) at work with a very flat torque curve and incredible, spine-tingling cam changeover sound. See video below! Eric and Josh drained the fuel tank to add 100 octane for the next passes.  Fueling is supplied by a custom stainless tank (Aeromotive hangler/bladder), custom stainless lines all dash 6, 1300x Injector dynamics and a Radium Fuel rail:

 

On 100 octane the SR20VE-T made 491hp/393tq at the wheels. That is roughly 570hp at the crank. Keep in mind this little Datsun roadster weighs 2250lbs with a hardtop and 14 gallons of fuel!

 

Driving Impressions

 

Following the dyno session we had to take the roadster out for a drive. This video shows multiple dyno passes and test drives, volume up!

 

 

Here are a few driving impressions from the three of us, enjoy!

Eric

“The car went from being an impressive car to completely coming alive and becoming a rocket ship that just keeps pulling. The VVL is like another level of performance. The power comes on very progressive and linear to give the chassis the best chance of getting as much as possible out of it. We made multiple setting to help with driving goals based on the roads and situations we are in.”

 

“The suspension has been a lot of work and has really paid off many times over be able to get this power to the ground and drive the car like it was intended. The rear suspension is so predictable and precise that immediately I had a lot of confidence to be able roll some power out of the corner. Rob had truly made this dream come alive and make this car so very impressive.”

 

Rob

 

“The cam control and air flow from the VVL is staggering, just really super cool. I’m not surprised…from being around the DR30 and seeing all the cars Eric and Michael Spreadbury have built over the years.  This roadster continues to evolve as they continue their craft with each chapter revealing a new level like a boost controller: 5 years ago was 10lbs of boost, 2 years ago 12lbs,  and now 22lbs (this roadster should only be driven on high!) Eric Straw isn’t just one man. He seems to be a mass of people to not only design an engine bay and make it work efficiently but also bolt a non-matching transmission, and then that rear end suspension….obviously one of the biggest things when modifying a 50+yr old Datsun with high power levels is trying to put it down. His engineering accounted for enough tire, brake and balance. The setup Eric built for this roadster I could not believe how we could deliver 500+hp/almost 400ftlbs of torque, and yes we were lighting off the tires but…I still felt like I was in control. We were on ice, but I felt like I was on Speedvision from back in the day of World-rallying Championship..with just a slight motion of the steering wheel I could rotate that car wherever I wanted. 

 

Alvin

 

“As a passenger and long-time roadster owner…it’s not easy for me to ride shotgun in a high-powered car but I still can’t fathom how smooth it felt under intense acceleration. These are super tiny cars and to see both Eric and Rob harness it was a testament to Eric’s chassis engineering. I’ve been in other Datsuns with turbo SRs and they will pitch sideways under full throttle but this one was planted even on our rough downtown roads. Watch the video. It’s epic.”

 

All of us concluded and shared similar sentiments: Eric’s suspension enabled this roadster to manage all that power. When boost hits and the tires break loose it can be seemingly glide controllably with steering input…no hopping or skittering. The rear suspension consists of a hybrid rear axle built by Moser based on a Dana 44 with a Torque arm and 3-Link Watts with Ridetech coil-overs. Up front are custom Ridetech coil-overs and sway bar.  R33 GTR Brembo brakes provide stopping power. The Watanabe wheels are wrapped in 225F/245(!)R tires which are massive for a stock-flared roadster body.

Fast Family: Eric’s FX35

At Z Car Garage we enjoy working with late-model Nissans as much as earlier Datsuns. Our customer Eric R brought his Infiniti G35 Coupe to us back in 2009 and ten years later we helped him find a 2008 Infiniti FX35.  The FX got many upgrades to make it exactly the way Eric envisioned and he’s been enjoying it with his family as well as backroads.

 

The first generation (S50) FX-series models have aged rather well and we dig their combination of styling, power and versatility. Eric recalls how he became an FX owner:

“I’ve always been a car enthusiast.  My mom owned a 72 240Z back in the day and in 2007 my wife and I purchased a G35 Coupe 6MT and after a disappointing experience with the local Infiniti dealer, took the car to Rob and ZCG.  Needless to say, the knowledge base and Rob’s unique brand of engagement with his customers was refreshing. It was one of the best customer service experiences I’ve had and ZCG took exceptional care of our G35.  After a couple years of ownership, we had to give up the G Coupe with the onset of…kids.
Fast forward nearly a dozen years and the kids a bit older, I started my search for a new car. It needed to be sporty but still functional as a daily driver. It needed to haul mail and still haul the kids and the bikes and the gear.  The FX covered nearly every one of my criteria in one package, but fell a little short in visual cues and base line performance.

Timing worked out as our customer Chris’2008 FX35 AWD (Sport & Tech pac) was up for sale:

“As I searched for potential candidates, I was thrilled to reconnect with Rob and ZCG.  He helped me focus my search efforts and game plan what I envisioned for the car.   After a year of searching my FX came up for sale.  As luck would have it, it was a car already under the care of ZCG and a number of mods on my want list performed. Rob confirmed the quality and condition of the FX as well as the character of the seller.  It was, as they say, meant to be.”

 

 

Eric’s first visit with his FX focused on power and chassis upgrades. The VQ35 was treated to a Motordyne plenum spacer, JWT POP Charger and Uprev street tune providing more power throughout the rev range.

 

Keeping the FX glued to the tarmac are BC Racing coilovers and Stillen strut tower brace paired with a set of Nissan/Rays Eng GT-R R35 (CBA) rear wheels:

 

The wheels were refinished and we mount/balanced Michelin Pilot AS/3+ tires (295/45zr20) with new TPMS. We love the finish on these and they look right at home on the FX:

 

The stock brakes were upgraded to Akebono units from the G37/370z with a Stoptech sport brake kit (pads, slotted rotors, braided steel lines). This required changing the rear knuckle to a FX50 part.

 

Eric is all smiles with the upgrades and he’s been driving the FX everywhere:

“Rob and the ZCG Team worked incredibly hard to get everything on the car set in place so that I could immediately enjoy this family battle wagon and that’s just what I’ve been doing. Couldn’t be happier.”

 

We even spotted the FX at a local DrivingWhileAwesome (DWA) Cars & Coffee event in Santa Cruz, CA:

 

Eric recently came back for a Nismo exhaust.
